Old Fashioned debuted for Fox Hill Farm on October 6, 2008 in a Maiden Special Weight race at Delaware Park. Though high on the colt, his connections didn’t know if he would win his debut as there other colts in the field with experience already under their belt. Despite stumbling out of the gate, Old Fashioned ran down the favorite at the wire, winning by a nose.
His next outing came on Nov. 3, again at Delaware Park. Old Fashioned had another eventful trip yet smoked his competitors, winning by 15 ½ lengths. His win was so impressive that it was decided he’d move up to graded stakes company next. On Nov. 29, Old Fashioned traveled to Aqueduct in New York to compete in the G2 Remsen Stakes. Old Fashioned shot out of the gate to the lead where he remained for the entire 1 1/8-mile event, winning by 7 ¼ lengths. The colt caught the eyes of the public, and was rewarded by being named a 2-Year-Old Eclipse finalist.
With the two leaders of the division purchased by Sheikh Mohammed and subsequently sent to Dubai, Old Fashioned was made the early 2009 Kentucky Derby favorite.
Old Fashioned started his 3-year-old season off well on February 16, 2009 in the G3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park. Old Fashioned kept his status as the divisional favorite by winning by 3 ¼ lengths. Undefeated in four starts, Old Fashioned then set his sights on the Mar. 14 Rebel Stakes (G2). In a mild shocker, Old Fashioned finished 2nd, 2 ¼ lengths behind longshot Win Willy. The track had received days of downpours leading into the race, so with a track surface resembling peanut butter, it wasn’t known how much the track surface hurt the colt’s chances.
The Apr. 11 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park was to be Old Fashioned’s final stepping stone to the Derby. Disappointingly, Papa Clem beat Old Fashioned to the wire by a half-length. Much more disappointing than the loss, however, was the discovery back at the barn that Old Fashioned didn’t come out of the race well. X-rays taken that night showed that he had suffered a non-displaced slab fracture of his right knee.
Old Fashioned was shipped to Lexington, KY to have surgery performed by Dr. Larry Bramlage at Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic. Afterwards, Dr. Bramlage advised that the injury was such that Old Fashioned could return to training, but he would be significantly hindered by the injury and therefore not be able to regain his top form. Owner Rick Porter announced that Old Fashioned had retired and would stand at stud in 2010, where it is hoped that he will pass on his talent and heart to his offspring.
